Researchers are evaluating a brief motivational interviewing intervention called Chat to address alcohol and cannabis use among diverse teenagers aged 12 to 17. Teens are screened for risky alcohol or cannabis use using the six-item CRAFFT tool at partner clinics. Those identified as at-risk and interested in participating will complete an online consent process with their parent and have their contact information collected for follow-up. The study aims to understand changes in the frequency and consequences of alcohol and cannabis use over 12 months. Participants are assigned to either the Chat intervention, which can be delivered virtually or in-person, or to enhanced usual care (EUC), which consists of receiving an informational brochure about alcohol and cannabis use. The assignment occurs within 30 days after completing a baseline survey. Recruitment is planned from month 9 to month 42 of the project, with the Chat intervention and follow-up surveys scheduled accordingly over a 12-month period. Throughout the study, teens complete web-based surveys at baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. They receive electronic gift cards as incentives after completing each survey. Researchers will monitor changes in alcohol and cannabis use frequency and related consequences over these time points. The study expects to screen about 5,644 teens, with around 847 screening positive as at-risk, and approximately 500 consenting to participate.
