Healthy Volunteer

This research aims to explore how experiences like trauma and resiliency relate to changes in bodily systems during stress and overall health. It focuses on individuals who identify as American Indian living on or near the Blackfeet Reservation, studying connections between mental and physical health, trauma history, and physiological stress responses. The investigation includes looking at cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory activity during a controlled challenge. Volunteers participate in two laboratory sessions. During the first visit, they provide a blood sample for health factor analysis, complete questionnaires about demographics and health, and undergo body composition assessments. In the second visit, participants experience a brief psychological challenge called the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task, which involves adding numbers aloud while looking in a mirror. Researchers measure cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and inflammatory responses during rest and the task. Questionnaires about stress, arousal, and anxiety are completed before and after the task. Participants contribute information through blood tests, body measurements, and questionnaires. Researchers measure changes in blood pressure, heart rate, cortisol, inflammatory markers, blood sugar, cholesterol, and mental health symptoms like depression and anxiety. The study helps understand how trauma and resilience affect health in this community. Total participation includes two lab visits with detailed assessments of physiological and psychological responses to stress.
