Researchers are investigating the effects of omega-3 fortified smoothies on physical performance and recovery in active duty soldiers. The study aims to assess how daily consumption of 1600 mg of omega-3 through these smoothies over eight weeks influences the Omega-3 Index (O3I) and relates to measures of strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity, power, and recovery as evaluated by the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) and other assessments. This research builds on evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can improve muscle recovery and reduce soreness, which may enhance overall health and performance in military personnel. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an omega-3 fortified smoothie group or a placebo group receiving a non-fortified protein smoothie. Both groups will consume their assigned smoothie five days a week for eight weeks. The study is conducted at two Army training sites, Ft. Campbell and Ft. Drum, with approximately 100 soldiers participating. The intervention group receives smoothies containing omega-3 powder and protein, while the control group receives protein smoothies without omega-3. During the study, participants will complete the ACFT and provide finger prick blood samples at the beginning and end of the eight-week period to measure their Omega-3 Index. They will also complete surveys about diet, physical activity, and sleep quality. Researchers will compare changes in omega-3 levels and physical performance between groups to determine the impact of omega-3 supplementation. This includes monitoring recovery, perceived exertion, pain levels, and overall physical fitness outcomes.
