Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Adult patients (18 years or older) with malignant mesothelioma
- Undergoing surgery with hyperthermic intraoperative chemotherapy with cisplatin performed by Dr. Raphael Bueno or another BWH thoracic surgeon
You will not qualify if you...
- Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 45 ml/min/1.73m2 on screening or preoperative labs, or end-stage kidney disease requiring renal replacement therapy
- Serum magnesium level higher than 3 mg/dl on screening or preoperative labs
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or myositis
- Coronary artery disease within the past year, including positive stress test, significant vessel stenosis, stents placement, or bypass surgery
- Sinus bradycardia with heart rate below 55 bpm on any ECG in the past 6 months
- High-grade atrioventricular block (2nd degree type II or 3rd degree) without a pacemaker
- Positive COVID-19 test within 10 days before surgery
- Prisoner status
- Known hypersensitivity to magnesium sulfate
- Participation in another study with experimental therapy that might interact with intravenous magnesium
- Any condition that might increase risk or affect study integrity as judged by the principal investigator
- Conflicts with other studies
