Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Adults aged at least 18 years
- Able to perform shoulder abduction task (confirmed during screening and initial examination)
- Safe to undergo MRI
- Able to follow visual instructions using MRI-compatible vision correction goggles
- No brainstem or cerebellar lesions
- No severe concurrent medical problems
- Cognitive and attentional capacity to focus on a task
- Able to communicate in English or Spanish
- Stroke participants must have sustained only one unilateral subcortical, ischemic lesion in the Middle Cerebral Artery territory at least one year prior
- Paresis limited to one side with moderate-to-severe upper limb motor impairment (Upper Extremity Fugl-Meyer score between 10 and 45)

- MRI contraindications
- Severe claustrophobia
- Pregnant women
- Prisoners
- Vulnerable populations
- Diagnosis or history of multiple sclerosis
- Diagnosis or history of brain tumor
- Diagnosis or history of brain radiation
- Diagnosis or history of traumatic brain injury
- Diagnosis or history of dementia
- Diagnosis or history of Parkinson's disease
- Concurrent enrollment in another intervention study
- Concurrent use of medications that suppress central nervous system activity
