Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Adults aged at least 18 years
  • Able to perform shoulder abduction task (confirmed during screening and initial examination)
  • Safe to undergo MRI
  • Able to follow visual instructions using MRI-compatible vision correction goggles
  • No brainstem or cerebellar lesions
  • No severe concurrent medical problems
  • Cognitive and attentional capacity to focus on a task
  • Able to communicate in English or Spanish
  • Stroke participants must have sustained only one unilateral subcortical, ischemic lesion in the Middle Cerebral Artery territory at least one year prior
  • Paresis limited to one side with moderate-to-severe upper limb motor impairment (Upper Extremity Fugl-Meyer score between 10 and 45)

  • MRI contraindications
  • Severe claustrophobia
  • Pregnant women
  • Prisoners
  • Vulnerable populations
  • Diagnosis or history of multiple sclerosis
  • Diagnosis or history of brain tumor
  • Diagnosis or history of brain radiation
  • Diagnosis or history of traumatic brain injury
  • Diagnosis or history of dementia
  • Diagnosis or history of Parkinson's disease
  • Concurrent enrollment in another intervention study
  • Concurrent use of medications that suppress central nervous system activity
