What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) in men, focusing on how the brain reacts to methamphetamine-related cues and how this reaction changes with abstinence. The study compares men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men (non-MSM) to understand differences in cue-reactivity and the effects of cognitive strategies on methamphetamine cravings and use. This observational study aims to identify specific brain markers related to these responses and their changes over time. Participants will be grouped based on their sexual orientation and methamphetamine use status, including current users with about 2 weeks of abstinence and abstinent users with about 3 months of abstinence. The study involves observing the impact of a behavioral strategy called Cognitive Reappraisal (CR), which helps regulate emotions and may reduce the brain's response to methamphetamine cues. CR techniques include strategies like distancing and reinterpretation to change emotional reactions. Each participant will take part in a single EEG session to measure brain responses while completing cognitive tasks involving CR. The primary outcome is the change in EEG signals called the late positive potential (LPP) amplitude at around 2 weeks and 3 months of abstinence. The study will last two years, with screening and enrollment at different locations and the EEG session conducted at a medical school. Researchers will monitor the brain's reaction to cues and the possible impact of CR on methamphetamine use outcomes.
