Study of Microbiome and Environmental Factors in Children and Adults With Atopic Diseases in Mali

Researchers are studying allergic diseases such as asthma and atopic dermatitis in people living in Mali to understand factors that may influence these conditions. This observational case-control study compares people with allergic diseases to healthy individuals, examining differences in biological and environmental factors that might be linked to allergic diseases. The goal is to identify clues about the causes and contributing elements of these diseases by analyzing various samples and health information. Participants include people diagnosed with atopic diseases and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants undergo clinical evaluations and provide skin swabs, nasal swabs, induced sputum when possible, blood samples, stool samples, and drinking water samples. They also complete questionnaires about environmental exposures. Pulmonary function tests and skin electrical impedance measurements are performed to assess respiratory and skin function. Environmental samples from the community and participant homes are collected to evaluate pollution exposure. During the study, participants provide biological and environmental samples and complete health questionnaires. Researchers analyze the microbiome diversity in different body sites and measure environmental pollutants and immune markers. The main outcome is the difference in gut microbiome between allergic patients and healthy controls within 28 days after screening. Secondary measures include skin and nasal microbiome analysis, pollutant levels, and immune cell counts. The study involves thorough assessments focused on understanding allergic diseases and their environmental associations.
