Researchers are evaluating the accuracy of detecting circulating micro RNA miRNA biomarkers in children with sepsis or septic shock. This observational study aims to compare miRNA levels with current biomarkers and track changes in response to treatment. The study involves collecting blood, urine, and buccal swab samples from pediatric patients between 1 and 18 years old at five different time points. Participants include children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit PICU for sepsis or septic shock, as well as healthy children for comparison. All patients will receive standard care with antimicrobials and supportive therapies as needed. Samples will be stored for later analysis. During hospitalization, researchers will collect clinical data to calculate severity scores such as the Pediatric Risk of Mortality PRISM III and Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System TISS-28. Patient information will be de-identified and securely stored. The main outcomes measured include risk of mortality, organ failure, organ dysfunction, and overall patient acuity over an expected hospital stay of about three weeks.
