MOTIVATE to Improve Outcomes for Older Veterans With Musculoskeletal Pain and Depression
Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Aged 60 and older
- English-speaking
- Self-reported musculoskeletal pain on most days for the past 3 months that interferes with daily activities
- Pain intensity of 4 or higher on the numerical pain rating scale
- Pain interference score of 5 or higher on PEG-3
- Depressive symptoms score of 10 or higher on PHQ-9
- Capable of participating in home-based activity
- Interested in participating in a non-pharmacologic program
You will not qualify if you...
- Aged 59 or less
- No telephone access
- Not English speaking
- Unwilling to be randomized to either study arm
- Not interested in participating in a non-pharmacologic program
- Self-reported uncorrected hearing or visual impairments that prevent participation in telephone sessions or using pedometer
- Moderate or severe cognitive impairment (3 or more errors on six-item screening exam)
- Dependence on wheelchair, bed-bound status, severe balance impairment, or severe osteoarthritis preventing physical activity
- Illness requiring hospitalization in the last 3 months interfering with physical activity intervention (e.g., fall, gout attack, stroke, heart attack, heart failure, surgery for blocked arteries)
- Suicidal intent, uncontrolled psychotic disorder, psychiatric hospitalization within 1 year, or enrollment in active substance use program
