What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying urinary tract infections (UTIs) that may occur after removal of ureteral stents in adults aged 18 and older. This multicenter, multinational observational study aims to understand the incidence of UTIs after stent removal with or without antibiotic use in patients who had a sterile urine culture before stent placement and no infection during the time the stent was in place. The study also seeks to identify risk factors for UTIs following stent removal and compare infection rates between stents removed in an outpatient clinic versus those removed by patients at home using a string. Patients receiving ureteral stents during endoscopic procedures will have their stents removed either in an outpatient office or at home by string extraction. Antibiotic use during stent removal will vary according to standard care at each participating center. Before stent removal, a urine sample will be collected. Following removal, patients will complete a questionnaire about symptoms of urinary tract infection. If symptoms such as urgency, frequency, pain during urination, or blood in urine exceed usual post-procedure discomfort, patients will provide an additional urine sample for testing. Throughout the study, researchers will monitor participants for signs of febrile and non-febrile UTIs within 30 days after stent removal. The main measure is the number of participants who develop UTIs following stent removal. This includes evaluations through symptom questionnaires and urine tests. The study will also track safety and infection rates over time, helping to guide future recommendations on antibiotic use and stent removal practices. Participation involves urine testing, symptom reporting, and follow-up within a month after the stent is taken out.
