Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Signed Informed Consent Form
- Age between 18 and 60 years
- Body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 50 kg/m2
- Ability to understand and communicate in German sufficiently for written and oral education
- Blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg
- Normal glucose metabolism with HbA1c below 6.5% and fasting glucose below 7.0 mmol/l
- Normal lipid metabolism including LDL cholesterol below 5.0 mmol/l
- No more than 2 metabolic syndrome criteria combined (excluding waist circumference): triglycerides greater than 1.7 mmol/l, HDL cholesterol above 1.0 mmol/l (male) or above 1.3 mmol/l (female), fasting glucose at least 5.6 mmol/l, blood pressure at least 130/85 mmHg
You will not qualify if you...
- Pregnancy
- Use of medications or presence of pathologies that prevent safe fat tissue biopsies
- History of or planned bariatric surgery
- Medical conditions that prevent examinations and testing, such as symptomatic cardiovascular diseases
- Active malignant tumor with less than 2 years remission
