Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Participants must be right-handed
- Ability to read and speak English
- For bulimia nervosa (BN) group: diagnosis of BN with at least one binge eating episode and one self-induced vomiting episode per week for at least three months, with binge episodes always accompanied by self-induced vomiting
- Stable medication dose for at least 6 weeks if medications affect mood, appetite, or weight
- For healthy control (HC) group: no binge eating or purging episodes in past three months
- No current or past history of eating disorder for HC group as diagnosed by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders
You will not qualify if you...
- History of gastric bypass surgery
- Medical conditions that acutely affect eating behavior or weight such as pregnancy, lactation, or thyroid disease
- Current medical or psychiatric instability requiring hospitalization in past three months
- Lifetime history of psychosis or bipolar disorder
- History of neurological disorder or injury such as stroke or head injury with more than 10 minutes loss of consciousness
- Current substance use disorder
- Body mass index (BMI) less than 19 kg/m2
- Acute suicidality requiring hospitalization
- Exclusions for fMRI as specified by the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research
- Food allergy that cannot be accommodated through substitutions to the laboratory test snack
