Study of a New Digital Communication Tool to Improve Oral Prevention for Children Aged 8 to 18 Undergoing Multi-Bracket Orthodontic Treatment at Reims University Hospital

Researchers are studying children aged 8 to 18 years old who are receiving multi-brackets orthodontic treatment at Reims University Hospital. They aim to find out if regular oral prevention consultations every six months and improved communication between dentists and orthodontists can reduce the risk of tooth decay and plaque buildup during orthodontic treatment. This observational study compares children who receive this regular prevention and communication support to those who completed their treatment without it in 2024. Participants are divided into two groups a control group of children who finished their orthodontic treatment by the end of 2024 without regular preventive follow-up, and a study group starting treatment in 2024 who receive semi-annual oral prevention appointments for up to four years. Dentists and orthodontists in the study group can use a new digital communication tool to share information and adjust treatment based on the patients oral hygiene and caries risk. Children in both groups will have their dental health monitored through regular evaluations every six months, including measurements of tooth decay using the DMFT index, plaque levels, and the ICDAS score. Additional data like oral hygiene habits, food intake, and socio-professional information will be collected. The study will assess how regular preventive care and practitioner communication impact caries risk and plaque index over the course of treatment, lasting up to four years.
