Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Any patient with a solid tumor diagnosis and any number of brain metastases clinically indicated for whole brain radiation therapy
- Age 18 years or older
- Karnofsky Performance Status 70 or higher
- Prior stereotactic radiosurgery allowed per physician discretion
- Prior craniotomy allowed if radiation therapy starts at least 2 weeks after surgery
- Prior partial brain radiation allowed if target volume is less than 50% of brain and per physician discretion
- Expected survival longer than 6 months
- Ability to understand and willing to sign informed consent
- Fluency in English and ability to complete questionnaires and neurocognitive testing
- Ability to undergo MRI with gadolinium
- Ability to return for follow-up visits up to 2 years after radiation treatment
- Prior, concurrent, or post-radiotherapy systemic therapy allowed per physician discretion
- Negative pregnancy test for premenopausal women
You will not qualify if you...
- Presence of leptomeningeal disease based on clinical, radiographic, or cerebrospinal fluid studies
- Prior whole brain radiation therapy
- Current or past use of memantine or other NMDA antagonists
- Known allergy to contrast agents or inability to have MRI imaging
- Uncontrolled illnesses affecting cognitive function such as symptomatic heart failure, unstable angina, prior stroke, uncontrolled epilepsy, or psychiatric illness limiting study compliance
- Pregnant or unwilling to use contraception during radiation therapy
- Participation in another investigational systemic therapy trial concurrently
