What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating nutrition counselling to improve diet and health in adults living with both type 2 diabetes and hypertension, a common combination known as cardiometabolic multimorbidity. This condition increases the risk of serious health problems and requires complex dietary management. The study aims to understand if personalized nutrition counselling can help patients better follow dietary recommendations, improve clinical measures like blood sugar and blood pressure, and enhance nutrition-related quality of life in Northeast Ethiopia where structured dietary support is limited. The trial includes 14 public hospitals randomized into two groups seven hospitals provide a structured, individualized nutrition counselling program based on the COM-B behaviour change model alongside routine care, while the other seven continue routine clinical care without additional counselling. The counselling involves six sessions over three months, tailored to each participants needs, preferences, and local food availability. The control group receives only standard care without the structured nutrition education. Participants will be assessed at the start and end of the 3-month intervention for dietary adherence using a questionnaire aligned with DASH diet principles, clinical outcomes including fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol via standardized tests, and nutrition-related quality of life measured two weeks after intervention completion. The study collects fasting blood samples following strict protocols and applies advanced statistical models to evaluate the effects. The total study duration spans from enrollment through the 3-month intervention and short-term follow-up for quality of life assessment.
