What this Trial Is About

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) refers to a group of inflammatory rheumatic diseases that cause joint inflammation and other symptoms like eye inflammation (acute anterior uveitis or AAU) and skin problems. Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) mainly affects the spine and can lead to vertebral fusion in advanced stages. The disease is more common in men and usually starts in young adulthood. Diagnosing axSpA involves imaging and clinical signs, and disease activity is tracked with specific indices. AAU is the most frequent eye-related symptom of SpA, often linked to a genetic marker called HLA-B27, and can cause serious eye issues if untreated. This research aims to study how common SpA is among patients with AAU and to explore clinical features based on HLA-B27 status in an ophthalmology setting. This is an observational study without drug treatments, focusing on patients who come to eye clinics with AAU. Researchers will follow a group of patients who have AAU to check for signs of axial and peripheral SpA using established classification criteria. The study will compare patients with and without the HLA-B27 marker to understand differences. Data will be collected over several years, with cross-sectional analyses planned after two and five years to assess SpA prevalence and incidence among these patients. Participants will be adults aged 18 to 75 who have uveitis but have not been previously diagnosed with SpA before their eye symptoms. The study involves clinical evaluations, imaging, and laboratory tests to classify SpA presence, along with monitoring of disease characteristics and genetic markers. The main outcomes include measuring the prevalence and incidence of SpA in AAU patients, comparing HLA-B27 status, and understanding clinical features. The study will help improve knowledge about the link between eye inflammation and SpA and guide future treatment and follow-up strategies.
