Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Meet Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) criteria for opioid use disorder
  • Initiating a new medication for opioid use disorder treatment episode
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Prescribed or administered more than 72 hours of medication for opioid use disorder in the 7 days prior to randomization
  • Known contraindication to methadone or buprenorphine
  • Unwilling to pursue or continue prenatal care or pregnancy counseling if pregnant
  • Actively suicidal or severely cognitively impaired preventing informed consent
  • Current severe comorbid substance use disorder needing residential or inpatient treatment
  • Unable to provide locator information including additional contacts
  • Unwilling to follow study procedures or be randomized to treatment
  • Previously enrolled in CTN-0131
  • Currently enrolled in another conflicting research study
  • Currently in jail, prison, or other overnight facility required by court or have pending legal actions preventing participation
  • Unable to conduct research assessments in English
