Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Complicated appendicitis with presumed perforation on CT scan and phlegmon or abscess larger than 2 centimeters
You will not qualify if you...
- Antibiotic treatment for more than 24 hours before enrollment
- Attempted drainage before randomization
- Pregnancy
- Allergy to beta-lactam or quinolone antibiotics requiring alternative treatment
- Previous major abdominal surgery by laparotomy
- Hospitalization within 2 weeks before randomization
- Septic shock at admission
- Mechanical ventilation
- Acute kidney failure requiring dialysis
