What this Trial Is About
This research aims to assess how changes in the Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter (ONSD) during Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) surgeries relate to predicting neurological problems after the procedure. It also explores the link between ONSD measurements and other routinely used monitoring methods during surgery to foresee neurological issues. The study focuses on patients with carotid artery stenosis, a key cause of ischemic strokes, who often have other health conditions and undergo this surgical treatment. Patients undergoing elective CEA under general anesthesia will have their ONSD measured using ultrasonography, a simple and noninvasive method, along with standard monitoring tools like ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and Bispectral Index (BIS). The study will observe ONSD changes at different times during surgery to see if they indicate cerebral hypoperfusion, ischemia, or increased intracranial pressure, which can occur due to carotid clamping and systemic hypotension during the operation. Participants will be evaluated from the time of surgery through the postoperative period, with ONSD and other parameters monitored to detect neurological complications. The main outcome is to determine whether ONSD changes can help predict neurological problems within 4 months after surgery. This approach may improve early detection and management of cerebral ischemia during CEA, potentially enhancing patient safety and outcomes.
