Evaluation of Patient Harassment of Pain Clinic Staff Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic An Observational Study on Behavioral Factors and Outcomes

Chronic pain can lead to psychological or behavioral issues, and some patients with chronic pain may occasionally harass the staff providing their care. The COVID-19 pandemic added significant stress to the general population, which may have worsened psychological problems in these patients. This study examines incidents of harassment toward pain clinic staff by patients, comparing occurrences before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative analyses of prospective electronic and clinic diary data to evaluate harassment incidents caused by patients. It looks into the factors that lead to these incidents, the outcomes of the incidents, system-related factors, and lessons learned. Behavioral therapy and psychotherapy are included as interventions in the study. Participants will be monitored through their interaction records, with detailed qualitative information collected sensitively for each harassment incident. The study focuses on measuring the percentage of patients who harassed clinic staff over a 12-month period. Analysis covers incident causes, effects, and systemic insights, helping to better understand and address patient violence in pain clinics.
