What this Trial Is About

This research aims to address health disparities in lung cancer screening between African American and white populations by targeting both provider and patient behaviors. The study will evaluate the effect of a multilevel intervention on primary outcomes such as provider-patient discussions, patients' intentions to undergo lung cancer screening, and their knowledge about screening, as well as secondary outcomes like screening referrals and completion. It is a quasi-experimental study conducted in partnership with four primary care clinics within the MedStar Health system. The intervention includes sending electronic medical record messages to primary care providers before scheduled visits to notify them about patients eligible for lung cancer screening and encourage discussions about the test's benefits and limitations. Additionally, a patient outreach specialist will educate eligible patients about lung cancer screening prior to their clinic visits. This combined approach aims to improve communication and knowledge at both the provider and patient levels. Participants will be involved from scheduling through telephone interviews and clinic visits. Researchers will assess provider-patient discussions, patients' screening intentions, and knowledge one week after the clinic visit. The study includes follow-up interviews and measures screening referrals and completion to evaluate the intervention's impact. Participants will be monitored from the time of appointment scheduling until after the post-visit assessments to understand the intervention's effectiveness comprehensively.
