What this Trial Is About
This research aims to implement and evaluate the Opioid Use Disorder Quality Measurement and Management (OUD-QM2) strategy developed by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) to improve treatment practices for people with opioid use disorder. The study focuses on how this strategy affects patients, families, and providers by examining both quantitative and qualitative data over several years. The goal is to develop a science-based approach for person-centered treatment in addiction services. The study involves performance coaching as the intervention, where clinic staff receive guidance to understand and improve quality measurement practices. This coaching is delivered to outpatient clinics in New York State in a stepped wedge trial design, with different clinics receiving the intervention at varying times between years 2 and 4. Clinics not yet receiving the coaching continue usual treatment, allowing comparisons over time. Surveys, qualitative interviews, and focus groups will also be conducted with clinics and stakeholders at years 1, 3, and 5 to gather feedback and insights. Participants will be involved through surveys, interviews, and focus groups to share their experiences and perceptions of the quality measures. Administrative data from all outpatient clinics in the New York OASAS system will be analyzed to assess outcomes like retention in care, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and mortality rates before and after the intervention. The study spans multiple years, allowing ongoing monitoring and annual updates to stakeholders to support broader dissemination of findings and improvements in addiction treatment.
