Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Male
- Age 55-65; 18-28
- Able to understand and execute instructions
- Able to answer questions about the study and understand the protocol after reading the consent form
- Able to participate in regular follow-up visits
You will not qualify if you...
- Severe chronic or acute diseases such as cancer, congestive heart failure, COPD, diabetes, inflammatory conditions, active liver disease, metabolic acidosis, uncontrolled hypertension, epilepsy, recent cardiovascular events, severe renal insufficiency, inflammatory bowel disease, persistent glucocorticoid treatment, neurological diseases (dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's), infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis), or severe autoimmune diseases
- Body mass index less than 18.5 or greater than 30
- Persistent alcohol or drug abuse
- Treatment with drugs affecting glucose metabolism (other diabetes drugs, systemic glucocorticoids, niacin)
- Hypersensitivity to metformin or any ingredient in the medication
- Use of metformin, low-dose aspirin, acarbose, or vitamin C in the past 3 months
- Unable to provide informed consent
- Any other condition that the researcher believes may negatively affect the study or participant's health
