Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age under 5 years
  • Platelet count of 75,000/uL or less
  • Hemoglobin level greater than 5 and up to 9 g/dL
  • P. falciparum parasitemia of 500 parasites/uL or more
  • Diagnosis of severe malaria meeting WHO criteria
  • Ability and willingness of legal guardian to comply with study protocol
  • Residence within the health clinic catchment area
  • Signed informed consent from parent or legal guardian
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Residence in foster care or under government supervision
  • Residence outside the hospital catchment area or planned relocation
  • Any condition that may compromise participant safety or data quality as judged by the investigator
  • Any contraindication to whole blood transfusion
