What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating if adding Air Quality Index (AQI) information to asthma action plans can improve asthma management in children aged 8 to 17 years with asthma. The study also aims to understand changes in nasal gene expression in children who feel more sensitive to outdoor air pollution. The trial compares two types of AQI information—EPA-AQI and commercial AQI—to a control group to see if either approach improves asthma outcomes over time. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group receiving standard outdoor air pollution education and an asthma action plan; an EPA-AQI group receiving standardized pollution and AQI education with instructions for EPA-AQI use and a tailored asthma plan; and a commercial-AQI group receiving similar education and an asthma plan based on the commercial AQI. Participants will demonstrate their ability to use the AQI via smartphone or website. Throughout the 48-week study, participants will have visits every four weeks, including 10 telephone calls and 3 in-person visits. They will provide nose and blood samples and receive standardized education. Researchers will measure changes in asthma control scores regularly and assess quality of life, severe asthma flare-ups, and gene expression related to pollution sensitivity. The study monitors asthma outcomes from baseline through 48 weeks to evaluate the impact of AQI information.
