As human life expectancy has increased, cancer has become more common among older adults, with most solid tumors considered age-related diseases. This research focuses on patients aged 65 and older with gastrointestinal cancer who undergo surgery aimed at curing their disease. The study aims to identify factors that predict declines in function and quality of life after 12 months, as well as cancer outcomes over a 5-year follow-up period. The study observes patients with gastrointestinal cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, and other related organs who have resectable disease and are treated with surgery intended to cure the cancer. There are no interventions being tested instead, researchers follow these patients prospectively to evaluate outcomes related to their surgery and health status. Participants will be monitored over time to assess changes in their functional abilities and quality of life at 12 months and oncological results at 5 years. Data collected include surgical outcomes, functional status, and cancer progression. The study is observational and involves longitudinal follow-up to build predictive models for health decline and cancer prognosis in this older population.
