Patient Empowerment Program to Improve Mental Health and Quality of Life in Men With Prostate Cancer Undergoing Treatment

Researchers are evaluating the Prostate Cancer Patient Empowerment Program PC-PEP in men diagnosed with prostate cancer to improve mental health and quality of life. The study focuses on addressing side effects from common treatments like surgery and radiation, which often cause urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and reduced physical function. It aims to support mental health and overall well-being in men undergoing curative treatment for prostate cancer. The PC-PEP is a six-month home-based program that includes aerobic and strength training exercises, pelvic floor muscle training, meditation, social connection, and healthy lifestyle practices. Participants receive daily reminders via text or email to encourage engagement, and they are paired with peers for social support. The program also involves educational materials delivered through multimedia and in-person sessions to teach life skills and habits that may reduce treatment-related side effects. Participants will be involved in regular assessments including online surveys at the start, 6, 12, and 24 months, and weekly compliance surveys during the program. Researchers will measure mental health as the primary outcome and other factors such as physical and mental quality of life, urinary and sexual function, sleep quality, diet, anxiety symptoms, and relationship satisfaction. The study also monitors health care utilization and self-efficacy over a two-year period.
