Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Ability to provide informed consent
- Age between 18 and 75 years
- BMI of 40 kg/m2 or higher, or 35 kg/m2 or higher with obesity-related comorbidity
- Scheduled for primary bariatric surgery: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy
- Stable weight with less than 10% change in the 3 months before assessment
- For subgroup: scheduled for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, insulin resistant (impaired fasting glucose > 5.6 mmol/L or fasting insulin > 74 pmol/L), and postmenopausal women
You will not qualify if you...
- Any medical condition except obesity-related issues or well-treated hypothyroidism
- Pregnancy expected within two years after surgery
- For subgroup: coagulation disorders or use of anticoagulants
- Use of medications except statins, antihypertensives (excluding ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers), and thyroid hormone
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
