The goal of this research study is to investigate whether a virtual, home-based, prehabilitation aerobic and resistance exercise (PARE) training program implemented 8 weeks prior to receiving autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) for multiple myeloma participants will improve muscular strength, physical capacity, patient reported outcomes, and cardiometabolic health outcomes. Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Over 18 years old.
  • Diagnosis of multiple myeloma and referral to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute transplant team for first autologous stem cell transplant.
  • Planning to receive autologous stem cell transplant after 8 weeks with or without neoadjuvant treatments at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
  • Medical clearance to perform moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic and resistance exercise and fitness testing by treating physician or certified clinical exercise physiologist.
  • Able to speak English.
  • Currently participate in 60 minutes or less of structured moderate to vigorous intensity exercise per week.
  • Willing to travel to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for required data collection.
  • Able to understand and willing to sign a written informed consent document.
  • Women of child-bearing potential must agree to pregnancy testing and use adequate contraception prior to and for 6 months after study participation.
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • History of unstable angina, abnormal resting ECG, or heart attack in the past month that would prevent safe cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
  • Known spinal instability, spinal cord compression, neurological deficits, or other contraindications to exercise.
  • Recent spinal surgery or intervention for pathological fractures within 6 weeks.
  • Considered unsuitable for participation by transplant or study team.
  • High risk of pathologic fracture of weight-bearing bones as determined by physician.
  • Unable or unwilling to regularly participate in an exercise program.
  • Pre-existing musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, or metabolic diseases that could worsen with exercise.
  • Active malignancies requiring therapy other than multiple myeloma.
  • Currently participating in more than 60 minutes of structured moderate to vigorous exercise per week.
  • Unable to travel to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for data collection.
  • Investigator opinion that participant may not comply with safety monitoring requirements.
