Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age between 18 and 85 years
  • Isolated rotational ankle fracture (AO/OTA 44 types A-C) treated with surgery
  • Abbreviated Injury Scale less than 3 for non-extremity body systems
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English
  • Age between 18 and 85 years
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English (control group)
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • History of chronic pain condition prior to the qualifying injury
  • Current pain management contract
  • Pathologic fracture
  • Daily use of gabapentin or opioids prior to enrollment
  • Chronic or ongoing acute pain condition (control group)
  • Previous bone fractures (control group)
  • Current use of pain medications (control group)
  • Any prior orthopedic surgical procedures (control group)
  • No surgeries within the last 5 years (control group)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (control group)
  • Major surgery or serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular, metabolic, renal, neurological, or severe psychiatric disorders (control group)
