This application addresses the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award FY21 W81XWH-22-CPMRP-IIRA area of Chronic Pain Management Research Program- The investigators will utilize subjects who have sustained ankle fractures and may develop chronic pain following bone union. No attempt will be made to affect the experimental outcome in the subjects. Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age between 18 and 85 years
- Isolated rotational ankle fracture (AO/OTA 44 types A-C) treated with surgery
- Abbreviated Injury Scale less than 3 for non-extremity body systems
- Ability to speak, read, and understand English
- Age between 18 and 85 years
- Ability to speak, read, and understand English (control group)
You will not qualify if you...
- History of chronic pain condition prior to the qualifying injury
- Current pain management contract
- Pathologic fracture
- Daily use of gabapentin or opioids prior to enrollment
- Chronic or ongoing acute pain condition (control group)
- Previous bone fractures (control group)
- Current use of pain medications (control group)
- Any prior orthopedic surgical procedures (control group)
- No surgeries within the last 5 years (control group)
- Peripheral neuropathy (control group)
- Major surgery or serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular, metabolic, renal, neurological, or severe psychiatric disorders (control group)
