What this Trial Is About

Depression and anxiety during pregnancy and the postnatal period are major health concerns, especially in developing countries. These mental health issues have been linked to disruptions in biological rhythms, sleep problems, and low daylight exposure. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Blue Light Therapy (BlueLT) for reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms in women with postpartum depression. The study also explores how alignment between rest-activity rhythms and internal body clock may influence treatment effects. Women with postpartum depression will be randomly assigned to use either the BlueLT device, which emits short-wavelength blue light, or a placebo device called ControlLT that emits dim, long-wavelength light. Both groups will use their assigned light therapy for 30 minutes daily before 4 p.m. for 30 consecutive days. Additionally, a healthy control group of women without depressive symptoms will be included to compare natural circadian changes unrelated to depression or treatment. Participants will be involved for about one month, during which their depressive and anxiety symptoms will be assessed from enrollment to the end of treatment. Researchers will also monitor rest-activity rhythms, light exposure, temperature rhythms, sleep patterns, social jetlag, and internal body time using a blood sample. Safety and health of both mothers and newborns will be observed, ensuring no interference from medical conditions or newborn health issues.
