What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the effect of a function-based assessment and intervention on reducing problem behavior in children with developmental disabilities or delays, aged birth to 5 years, within the context of IDEA Part C early intervention services. This study uses a single-case design to assess how well the intervention works when delivered in natural settings by caregivers. The intervention aims to teach children alternative skills, mainly communication, to replace problematic behaviors. After an initial baseline period with no intervention, caregivers will implement the function-based intervention, which involves reinforcing appropriate behavior and not reinforcing problem behavior. Caregivers will also learn general strategies to promote social-emotional skills, such as setting appropriate rules. Early intervention professionals will coach the caregiver-child pairs throughout the study to support the intervention delivery. Participants will be observed approximately once a week for a total of 15 observations to measure problem behavior and appropriate behavior changes. Caregivers will actively participate by teaching and reinforcing new skills with their child, supported by coaching from professionals and researchers. The entire study period spans from the start in late 2025 through follow-up until 2027, focusing on behavioral outcomes and caregiver implementation.
