Researchers are evaluating the impacts of the Qoyangnuptu Intervention App (QI App), a mobile health app designed for adolescents in a Southwestern Tribal community. The study aims to understand how a youth-focused behavioral health intervention can encourage ongoing engagement and improve behavioral health indicators in American Indian/Alaska Native youth. The app incorporates culturally relevant practices and evidence-based mindfulness techniques to address behavioral health disparities and promote resilience. Participants will use the QI App daily for six weeks, guided and encouraged by an anonymous, trained peer mentor through monitored one-on-one and group chats. They will log their mood and stress levels once per day and practice mindfulness skills such as guided breathing, meditation, drawing, coloring, and walking. The app also supports participation in Hopi cultural activities like running, helping users track progress toward team goals. Parents or guardians of participants will be informed about their child's app use during the six-week period. Participants will complete demographic and baseline surveys before starting the app and follow-up questionnaires at 6 and 12 weeks after beginning use. Focus groups will be held to gather feedback on the app experience, with options for Zoom or in-person meetings. Surveys can be completed electronically or via physical delivery and pickup. Researchers will measure the app's acceptability and engagement, monitor participant mood and stress, and assess the overall experience and cultural relevance of the intervention.
