Observational Study on Quality of Life After Cardiac Surgery in Patients With Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation

Researchers are conducting a prospective observational study to explore the quality of life in adult patients who develop atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. The study focuses on assessing how this condition affects patients wellbeing using surveys and qualitative questions. The research is led by Brigham and Womens Hospital and aims to gather detailed patient-reported outcomes over time. Participants will be adults scheduled for cardiac surgery involving cardiopulmonary bypass. They will complete several surveys including the SF-36, TSQM-9, and additional qualitative questions. These surveys are administered before surgery, and then again at one month and three months after the procedure to capture changes in quality of life and treatment satisfaction. Throughout the study, participants will answer questionnaires at three key time points before surgery, and at one and three months post-operation. The main outcome measured is the SF-36 score, which assesses overall health-related quality of life. Secondary outcomes include responses to qualitative questions and TSQM-9 scores that evaluate treatment satisfaction. The study involves no intervention other than survey participation and will monitor patients up to three months following surgery.
