Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age between 50 and 85 years
  • Moderate or greater pain on the ICOAP pain scale (A1 or B6)
  • Diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis (ICD-10 M17.x)
  • History of knee morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes
  • History of crepitus without warmth, redness, or sudden swelling
  • Tenderness on palpation at the medial or lateral joint line matching knee pain location
  • No primary knee pain in pes anserine, hamstring, or gastrocnemius tendons
  • Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2 or 3 on knee x-rays within the last year
  • Ability to complete surveys in English
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Kellgren-Lawrence grade 1 or 4
  • Pregnancy or women 54 years or younger with potential for pregnancy without sterilization
  • History of surgery on the affected knee
  • Use of injected corticosteroids within 3 months or hyaluronans within 6 months (or within 1 month if no sustained improvement)
  • Knee trauma in the last year causing current pain
  • History of rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, hemarthroses, or other inflammatory arthritis in the knee
  • History of symptomatic hip osteoarthritis
  • History of psychosis, personality disorder, or uncontrolled affective disorder
  • History of fibromyalgia
  • Active cancer treatment
  • Regular use of opiate analgesics, platelet-rich plasma, or acupuncture for the knees
