These include measurements of knee extension strength, hand grip strength, muscle mass, gait speed, chair stands, calf circumference, physical activity levels, and quality of life. Falls, emergency visits, hospitalizations, and mortality will also be tracked for one year. The study includes surveys and interviews to evaluate feasibility and accessibility, with adherence monitored by reminders and diaries.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Healthy volunteers or patients aged 65 years and above
  • Clinical Frailty Scale score of 3-4
  • Able to walk independently without any aid
  • Willing and able to consent and travel to study site for assessments and interventions
  • No regular exercise habits (less than 150 minutes/week moderate aerobic exercise and less than twice weekly strengthening exercises) for past 3 months
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Currently enrolled in any day rehabilitation or community exercise program
  • Contraindications to Whole Body Vibration Training (WBVT), including pregnancy, acute thrombosis, artificial joints in stimulated areas, recent fractures, or fresh wounds in stimulated regions
  • Diagnosis of dementia
  • History of diabetes mellitus
  • Body mass index less than or equal to 20 kg/m2
  • Recent hospital admissions within the last 3 months
  • End-stage organ failure
  • Poorly controlled chronic diseases, such as hypertension
  • New York Heart Association class II or above for heart failure patients
  • MUST score of 1 or higher
  • Secondary WBVT contraindications including acute musculoskeletal inflammation, arthrosis, tendinopathies, hernias, discopathy, stone disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or epilepsy due to injury risk

Treatment

Duration - 4 weeks

Participants receive either Whole Body Vibration Training three times per week for 4 weeks or usual care involving daily Otago exercises with exercise demonstration and follow-up.

Follow-up

Duration - Up to 1 year

Participants are monitored with assessments at 2 weeks and 3 months after the intervention to evaluate muscle strength, function, and other health outcomes, with falls and healthcare usage tracked up to 1 year.
