What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying how making access to smartphone apps dependent on proof of not smoking affects people trying to quit smoking. This research aims to explore how acceptable, practical, and effective this approach is for adults who smoke regularly and want to stop. The study includes small focus groups and pilot testing to gather detailed feedback and measure early results. Participants are divided into two groups. One group can unlock popular, non-essential apps like social media or games only if they meet carbon monoxide (CO) levels indicating they haven't smoked. The other group can unlock apps by submitting CO samples regardless of the results. The study includes initial usability testing followed by a randomized control trial comparing these two approaches over several months. During the study, participants will use the Re-Connect app and provide CO breath samples to verify smoking status. Researchers will assess how usable and acceptable the app is, how long participants use it, and their smoking abstinence based on CO readings and self-reports. Assessments include surveys and monitoring over a period of up to six months to understand the app's feasibility and preliminary impact on quitting smoking.
