Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Intubated patients with moderate to severe ARDS according to the Berlin definition (PaO2/FiO2 ratio ≤ 200 mmHg)
- Under continuous sedation with or without paralysis
You will not qualify if you...
- Age under 18 years
- Presence of bronchopleural fistula
- Pure COPD exacerbation
- Contraindications to EIT monitoring such as burns, pacemaker, or thoracic wounds limiting electrode placement
- Hemodynamic instability defined as systolic blood pressure < 75 mmHg or mean arterial pressure < 60 mmHg despite vasopressor use and/or heart rate < 55 bpm
- Attending physician considers transient high airway pressure unsafe
