The RAATE-MCI proposal is designed to determine the effects of physical activity on risk factors for Alzheimer's Disease in older African American adults. Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Self-identify as African American
- Aged 60 years or older
- Physically capable of exercise
- Willing to accept randomization
- Willing to attend group sessions
- Plan to live in the study area and able to travel to study facilities for 13 months
- Free of conditions that make regular exercise unsafe as judged by medical investigator
- Not currently engaged in regular physical activity
- Short Physical Performance Battery score of 4 or higher
- Meet criteria for mild cognitive impairment as defined by the NIA-AA research framework
- Willing to allow researchers to use data for research after study completion
You will not qualify if you...
- Cognitive impairment interfering with group participation
- Cognitive performance in the demented range
- Meet criteria for dementia
- Unwilling to give informed consent or accept randomization
- Too physically active based on activity measurements
- Uncontrolled hypertension (systolic >150 mmHg or diastolic >90 mmHg)
- Recent major heart or vascular events or surgeries within past 6 months
- Undergoing cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
- Uncontrolled diabetes or osteoporosis interfering with participation
- Currently enrolled in another randomized lifestyle or drug trial
- Another household member participating in RAATE or RAATE MCI
- Refusal to disclose amyloid PET scan results
- Refusal to allow anonymized data use after study
- Other medical, psychiatric, or behavioral factors interfering with participation or protocol adherence
