Reducing Alcohol-Involved Sexual Violence on College Campuses A Study of Harm Reduction Strategies for Undergraduates Ages 18 to 24

Researchers are studying ways to reduce sexual violence and hazardous drinking among undergraduate college students at higher risk, including those with a history of sexual violence, sexual or gender minorities, and students with disabilities. This longitudinal cluster-randomized controlled trial involves over 28 college campuses and builds on previous research showing high rates of sexual violence and binge drinking linked to victimization. The study focuses on improving prevention strategies in college health and counseling centers to better support vulnerable students and promote safer campus environments. The study compares different approaches to implementing the Giving Information for Trauma Support and Safety GIFTSS intervention, which educates students about sexual violence prevention and support. Four groups receive variations of GIFTSS training combined with learning collaboratives and provider scripts aimed at enhancing delivery. Additionally, the study integrates the myPlan safety decision aid app to offer tailored harm reduction strategies after clinic visits. Researchers will also examine campus policies that improve access to confidential services and reduce risky drinking. Participants are undergraduate students aged 18 to 24 receiving care at college health or counseling centers. Researchers will assess outcomes such as provider discussions and receipt of educational cards shortly after visits, with follow-ups at 4 and 12 months to measure use and confidence in harm reduction and sexual violence services, as well as changes in victimization and alcohol use patterns. The study will monitor implementation effectiveness, student engagement with safety tools, and policy impacts over time to inform better prevention efforts.
