Impact of Nursing Support After Hospital Discharge on Hospital Visits, Breathing Difficulty, and Quality of Life in Adults with Severe COPD Using Home Oxygen Therapy

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD is a progressive lung disease causing continuous airflow blockage and persistent respiratory symptoms. This trial evaluates the effect of multiple nursing interventions on reducing hospital admissions, dyspnea levels, and improving quality of life in COPD patients who use oxygen concentrators at home. The study focuses on patients with severe COPD stage 4, group D and aims to address the high burden of exacerbations that impact patients, families, and society. Participants are randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group receives a series of nursing supports including individualized education using a COPD booklet while still hospitalized, monthly phone calls to discuss illness, medications, oxygen concentrator use, and hospital visits, as well as participation in a WhatsApp group sharing educational materials. The control group receives standard hospital training and, after the study, is provided with home visits and educational resources. During the study, participants will be assessed using tools such as the modified Medical Research Council mMRC Dyspnea Scale and the St George Respiratory Questionnaire to measure symptoms and quality of life. Hospital admissions are tracked monthly up to six months. Researchers collect data via phone interviews and questionnaires, with each call lasting about 20 minutes. The study includes ongoing monitoring of hospital visits and patient questions, aiming to understand the impact of the nursing interventions over time.
