Study to Reduce Opioid Deaths in Illinois Using Case Management and Naloxone Support

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating strategies to connect individuals with opioid use disorder who are released from jails and prisons in Illinois to substance use treatment. This 5-year randomized control trial aims to test an intensive case management and peer recovery coaching model to improve treatment engagement and retention. The study also examines secondary outcomes like insurance enrollment, re-arrest, use of mental health services, and other related factors. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group receives case management and peer recovery coaching along with naloxone distribution, including tailored action plans, weekly to monthly follow-ups, and support during community re-entry. The second group receives usual care with naloxone training and kits upon release, plus information on harm reduction and treatment resources. Both groups receive harm reduction materials. During the study, participants will be followed for 12 months to assess addiction treatment engagement and other outcomes such as opioid and stimulant use, re-arrest rates, and health service costs. Researchers will collect data through interviews and follow-ups to monitor progress and safety. The total participation duration is one year, with assessments focused on treatment engagement and related behavioral and health measures.
