Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Adults aged 18 to 65 years who can understand instructions, follow study procedures, and provide written informed consent
- Volunteers will follow an isoenergetic diet provided by Mayo Clinical Research Trials Unit for 3 days before the study
- Overweight or obese volunteers with a BMI between 29.0 and 37.0 kg/m2
- Women with upper body/visceral obesity defined by waist-hip ratio > 0.85 and/or increased visceral fat by CT scan or metabolic syndrome criteria
- Men with upper body obesity defined by waist-hip ratio > 0.95 and/or increased visceral fat by CT scan or metabolic syndrome criteria
- Women with lower body obesity defined by waist-hip ratio < 0.75 and/or lower visceral fat by CT scan and normal fasting plasma triglycerides
- Men with lower body obesity defined by obesity with normal fasting plasma triglycerides, normal fasting plasma glucose, and greater leg fat by DEXA
- Female participants must not be pregnant or nursing
- Women of childbearing potential must have a negative urine pregnancy test at screening and on the study day
You will not qualify if you...
- History of ischemic heart disease
- History of atherosclerotic valvular disease
- Persistent blood pressure over 160/95 despite medication
- Current smokers
- Diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
- Use of medications that affect free fatty acid metabolism such as niacin, thiazolidinediones, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, or anabolic steroids
- Allergy to lidocaine
- Allergy to indocyanine green
