Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18 years or older
- ASA physical status I to III
- Scheduled for elective surgery
You will not qualify if you...
- Pregnancy
- History of upper gastrointestinal disease or previous surgery on the esophagus, stomach, or upper abdomen
- Documented abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as gastric tumors or recent upper gastrointestinal bleeding within 1 month
- Use of medicines that delay gastric emptying (e.g., anticholinergic agents, opioids)
- ASA class IV or higher
- Unable to understand English
- Cardiac cases with low ejection fraction
- Age above 65 years
- Liver or renal transplant cases
- Type 1 diabetes patients on insulin or sulphonylurea medication
