Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Age 18 years or older
  • ASA physical status I to III
  • Scheduled for elective surgery
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Pregnancy
  • History of upper gastrointestinal disease or previous surgery on the esophagus, stomach, or upper abdomen
  • Documented abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as gastric tumors or recent upper gastrointestinal bleeding within 1 month
  • Use of medicines that delay gastric emptying (e.g., anticholinergic agents, opioids)
  • ASA class IV or higher
  • Unable to understand English
  • Cardiac cases with low ejection fraction
  • Age above 65 years
  • Liver or renal transplant cases
  • Type 1 diabetes patients on insulin or sulphonylurea medication
