What this Trial Is About
Changes caused by Cerebral Palsy (CP) include differences in muscle structure and brain activity, leading to weakness, reduced ability to function, and less participation in physical activities. Strength training programs that focus on power training may improve gross motor skills in youth with CP. This research aims to explore how effective a personalized power training program called Resistance Intensive Personal Training (RIPT) can be for youth with CP, as well as the feasibility of offering this program through a community-hospital partnership in Calgary. The RIPT program is delivered by specialized physiotherapists and fitness professionals together at a community recreation center. It lasts for 12 weeks per session, with participants training 1 hour per day, 2 to 3 days per week in a group setting. Each participant receives one-on-one support to focus on their individual goals, which are set with their families using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. The training targets specific movements and muscles needed to reach these goals. Two sessions of RIPT will be offered, each including six youth aged 8 to 17. Participants will be assessed before, during, and after the program using outcome measures like the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and the Goal Attainment Scale to see if they meet their goals. Motor function and muscle power will be evaluated with clinical scales and devices. Quality of life will also be measured. After training, families and training partners will provide feedback on program delivery and acceptability through questionnaires and interviews. The study will last 14 weeks from consent to end, including assessments and follow-ups to monitor progress and feasibility.
