What this Trial Is About

This research aims to understand how diets enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFAs from animal or plant sources affect chronic inflammation linked to cardiovascular disease risk. The study focuses on adults over 55 years old at moderate to high cardiovascular risk, comparing the impact of these diets on a lipid and inflammation-based risk score. It also explores how these dietary changes might improve blood lipid, sugar, and inflammation markers while promoting public awareness of inflammation as a modifiable risk factor. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups a daily fish oil supplement providing specific amounts of DHA and EPA, a daily vegetable oil supplement Camelina Sativa Oil rich in alpha-linolenic acid plus vitamin E, or a regular diet with vitamin E only. These supplements will be taken as liquid oils for 12 weeks, with vitamin E added to balance antioxidant intake between groups. The vegetable oil dose equals about 1500 mg of n-3 PUFAs daily, while fish oil provides slightly higher amounts. During the study, participants will have clinical visits at the start and after 12 weeks, including blood sample collection for fatty acid and biomarker analysis. Researchers will also measure heart rate, blood pressure, waist circumference, and collect dietary information through questionnaires. The main measure is a lipid and inflammation risk score derived from blood tests, and the study will evaluate how well participants accept the dietary supplements. Data from compliant participants will be analyzed to assess the effects of these dietary strategies on chronic inflammation related to cardiovascular health.
