Risk and Protective Factors for Alcohol Relapse in Patients with Alcohol-related Liver Disease Undergoing Orthotopic Liver Transplantation

Researchers are investigating factors that influence the risk of returning to alcohol use in patients with alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) who have had a liver transplant. This observational study includes both retrospective and prospective parts, aiming to identify both risk and protective factors related to alcohol relapse. It focuses on patients who have undergone orthotopic liver transplantation due to ARLD or related exotoxicity causes. In the retrospective part, clinical data from patients who had liver transplants for ARLD in the past five years will be collected from medical records, lab tests, and outpatient consultations. The prospective phase will enroll patients undergoing liver transplantation at the study center, with four assessment points during routine follow-up visits. Data collected will include medical history, lab and histological results, surgical and diagnostic information, as well as psychiatric-psychological assessments and psychosocial background through clinical questionnaires. Participants will be monitored for up to seven years to track alcohol relapse and recurrence rates. Assessments will include clinical evaluations and psychiatric reviews to understand relapse risks. The study utilizes existing patient care visits for data collection, focusing on long-term outcomes and risk factors related to alcohol use following liver transplantation.
