Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Patients presenting for a screening colonoscopy
- Age 45 years or older
- Strict vegetarian diet (Group I) or omnivorous diet (Group II) as determined by a diet history questionnaire
- Non-smoker
- Ability and willingness to sign informed consent, complete web-based dietary assessment, and provide stool, colonic mucosa, and blood samples
You will not qualify if you...
- Current smokers (nicotine abuse only)
- Positive family history of colon cancer or related syndromes
- Recent antibiotic use within 1 month
- History of inflammatory bowel disease, radiation enteritis, or colitis
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Women of child-bearing potential with positive pregnancy test
- Heavy alcohol use (more than 14 drinks per week)
- Current use of anti-flatulence medications, probiotics, or fiber supplements
- Major dietary restrictions or following a special diet
- Positive fecal test or symptoms related to colon disease
