What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the use of beta-lactam antibiotics among patients treated for infections at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The study aims to find out how many patients achieve the desired drug levels to optimize treatment success, reduce drug toxicity, and help limit antibiotic resistance. It also seeks to identify groups where drug dosage adjustments may be needed and develop new research ideas to improve antibiotic use. Participants who are being treated for infection and have received or will soon receive beta-lactam antibiotics will be observed during their care at the NHS Trust. Their clinical information will be collected from electronic health records and biological samples will be taken to measure drug concentrations. The study will last for three years, during which various antibiotics and patient outcomes will be monitored and analyzed. During the study, participants will provide informed consent and allow access to their medical records and samples for drug level analysis. Researchers will track clinical factors, co-administered medications, infection biomarkers, and treatment responses to understand how well drug targets are met. The main outcome is the proportion of patients achieving target drug concentrations. This observational study will help inform future dose optimization research and support better infection management.

Your Study Journey

Screening

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

1 visit (in-person)

Monitoring

Duration - Up to 3 years

Participants who undergo routine care for infection management at Imperial College NHS Trust are observed. Clinical data are collected from electronic healthcare records and samples are taken for drug concentration analysis to evaluate antimicrobial target attainment.

Visits occur as part of routine healthcare; additional sample collections may occur during treatment
