Investigation of Salivary Biomarkers Related to Bone Remodeling in the Progression from Healthy Gums to Gingivitis and Periodontitis

This research aims to study salivary biomarkers linked to bone changes during the progression from healthy gums to gingivitis and periodontitis. These chronic inflammatory conditions cause destruction of the tissues supporting the teeth, including connective tissue and alveolar bone. The study evaluates how levels of specific salivary markers relate to disease stages and severity, hoping to improve early diagnosis and personalized treatment. Participants include individuals with healthy gums, gingivitis, or periodontitis. Unstimulated saliva samples will be collected and analyzed for markers such as IL-17, IL-23, IL-6, TGF-, RANKL, and OPG using ELISA methods. Participants will be grouped based on their periodontal status, with saliva collection occurring once at baseline to compare biomarker levels. During the study, participants will provide saliva samples and undergo clinical periodontal examinations to classify their disease stage. Researchers will measure the salivary concentrations of inflammatory and bone remodeling biomarkers at baseline. The findings aim to deepen understanding of periodontal disease mechanisms and explore non-invasive tools for early detection. The study runs from July 2025 to August 2026, involving adults aged 18 to 65.
